Someone is hoping you believe in them.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Genesis 4:9)

Don’t find yourself in the defensive position of Cain—“Why are you asking me? I’m not responsible for him. He’s a grown person. I’m not the babysitter. I have my own problems…”

No, you’re not your brother or your sister’s keeper. But if that is your response when God asks you about them—or when you’re prompted to text, or call, or support—then something has gone wrong in your heart.

Whether or not you have younger siblings, there is someone in your life who is desperately hoping you approve and that you’ll say so.

I was just at a wedding where the elder brothers offered the toast for their youngest brother. It wasn’t easy. There had been offenses, hurts, expectations, and disappointments. But… there we were, moment of truth. What would they say? Would they toast or roast? Would they encourage or embarrass? Would they be awkward or assertive?

The big brothers delivered, realizing that the heart of the matter is always a matter of the heart. And every one of our hearts is hoping that someone approves. Ultimately, yes, God. But God uses us—screwed up brothers, sisters, friends, and mentors—to speak life over those who look up to us.

So don’t miss your moment to step in, step up, and speak the words of life.

The tongue has the power of life and death… (Proverbs 18:21)
