It takes disconnecting from distractions to reconnect to what matters most.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:12

There are so many competing voices, noises, demands, and distractions. Most of them seem good, or necessary, or part of 21st century life. But where is the whisper?

Are you cutting through the crap and listening for the still, small voice?

Last week I spoke to a couple hundred people in a room that looked out over absolutely breath-taking scenery. The location was a private retreat center in Canada called Malibu. There was no cell reception. No televisions. I did not even have access to WiFi. We were OFF THE GRID.

And being off the grid was refreshing. Don’t get me wrong, I had a nervous twitch at first. Then I leaned in and enjoyed it. It was good for my soul for several reasons:

1. I slowed down.
2. I was more present with my family and others.
3. I wasn’t distracted by the infinite opportunities that await me online.
4. My screen time went to zero, and my brain was refreshed.
5. I got outside and was more active, physically.
6. I could listen to the still, small voice.

Can you schedule some off-the-grid time this month? Look at your calendar and put it in there. Say “no” to other options and keep this time sacred. Leave your phone at home, or turn it off. Get out in nature in some way, even if just for an hour. Disconnect… and in doing so, attempt to reconnect—to yourself, perhaps your loved ones, and definitely the Spirit who is always with you.
