Simplify your focus.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” —Jesus (Luke 10:41-42)

There may be 100 things that need to be addressed, sorted through, or figured out. But there is only one place to start. And the only way to start is to start.

What’s the one thing? What’s the next right step that will make the other steps easier or irrelevant.

This is a challenge, especially for people like me who want to see the big picture. But, often, we’re only shown enough for today. Take what you’re given and be faithful with that. Don’t let “overwhelm” keep you stuck. You can always pivot or adjust later. Beginning with the end in mind is important, when possible. But it’s not always possible. If your heart is right, and you’ve gotten the information you can, focus on what you know (or your best guess), and take the next step. Don’t worry about Step 28 when Step 1 is undone. Just focus on and do the next right thing—the action that is needed in this moment.

By the way, it may start with just sitting, listening, and being present—before being productive. (See Martha’s story, above.)
