MIND BASED SPIRITUALITY
To attain spirituality, the Maulana points out, a person does not need to retire to the jungles.Rather he must live in the midst of all the activities of the world and develop the ability of drawing spiritual lessons from material events and experiences. In his view, spirituality is not about putting a stop to one’s thinking process, rather it is another name for such high thinking that enables a person to manageissues relatedto stress, anger, negative thinking and discontentment.
PEACE IS THE GREATEST GOOD
90 YEARS OF PEACE BUILDING
Drawing inspiration from the Quran and the life of the Prophet Muhammad, the Maulana has developed an ideology of peace—principles which lay down how peace may be established betweenconflicting groups, controversies resolved, conflicts defused and enemies turned into friends. These are not just theoretical constructs, but have been successfully applied to calm down innumerable potentially violent situations in different parts of India over the past several decades.
COUNTERING VIOLENCE
Political Interpretation of Islam
Many of Maulana’s writings and lectures are devoted to understanding the root cause of violence perpetrated in the name of Islam, analyze the types of interpretations of Islam that instigate people to take up arms and how the thinking of those engaged in such heinous acts of terror may be redirected to peaceful channels. Central to Maulana’s contribution to offering a counternarrative to violence is his scholarly examination of the political interpretation of Islam. This ideology, developed in the 19th century, seeks to impose on people its self-styled understanding of religion by means of political power. Violence is inherent in such a doctrine, which the Maulana shows is contrary to the foundations of Islam and the methodology adopted by the Prophet.
THE SPIRITUAL MESSAGE OF THE QURAN
THE CREATION PLAN OF GOD
The central theme of the Quran is an elucidation of the meaning of human life. It urges the reader to not live solely on the material plane, but to reflect on the purpose of existence, develop a relationship of love with one’s Creator, purify one’s character, lead life with wisdom and prepare for life after death. Thus the content of the Quran is of universal significance in that it addresses every human being. This is why, the Maulana believes that translations of the Quran in different languages of the world need to be made popular so that Quranic spiritual guidancecanbecome accessible for people across the globe.
