We never stop asking, seeking, or knocking.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” —Jesus (Matthew 7:7-8)

These are the verses that follow those verses about not judging and not worrying about speck-issues in the lives of others. So, Jesus is talking to people who think they are “right” in their religious convictions. They are confident about their tribe, culture, and particular denomination, if you will. They grew up learning about the Jewish Torah and all the laws. They think they are the “chosen,” or “elected,” or “in.”

And Jesus tells them… “Keep asking… Keep seeking… Keep knocking… God will open new doors, offer new insights, and answer next questions.”

It was certainly a bit disorienting for people who continually reinforced for one-another that they were the “right ones.” But then again, Jesus was a ninja at raising the bar and making everyone’s ego a little uncomfortable. Simultaneously, to be in Jesus’ presence seemed to have the feeling of being home.

I wonder if those are the doors that Jesus invites us to keep knocking on—going deeper and further into new rooms within our true home.
