The invested make an impact. The entitled, they distract.

“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart…” – Jesus (Matthew 11:29)

Coffee Bean (coffee shop) was the destination for my meetings this morning. When I walked in and began looking for a place to sit, I immediately noticed Captain Coffee Bean’s workstation. I don’t know Captain Coffee Bean—a name I just game him today—but the staff of this fine establishment are quite familiar with him. Apparently, this gentleman comes in early in the morning three days a week and takes the four-top table in the corner as his personal office suite. Not only that, but he totes in a ginormous computer monitor and a second upright display for notes and books, complete with a reading lamp. His roller luggage (that wouldn’t fit in an overhead compartment) is behind his chair, and books and papers are spread out across the desk, under bottles of water and coffee cups. It’s a scene. And it’s a lot.

It’s one thing to be invested in a place—known and knowing the people there. It’s another thing altogether to take up residence and an awkward amount of space just because we can. Investment, not entitlement. Let’s be investors and elevate the places we spend our time.
