How you start the day is important. We began with being still and paying attention to what’s already inside our bodies. Now we turn our attention to what we intentionally put inside…. food.

I started making shakes every morning, not because I love them. And not because I think they are the world’s best breakfast. I began drinking shakes because it was the only way to consistently get vegetables into my kids. I know there are other good strategies for getting kids to eat normal, healthy, adult food for dinner, but our first kid (Jack) was especially particular, so Hilary and I chose a different route.

Since it’s a new year, why not try a new shake routine. Here are the steps to make it super easy:

  1. Get a good blender. I like Vitamix, but there are others.
  2. Start with filtered water—6 oz per drinker.
  3. Grab a fist-full of spinach leaves from a resealable bag (Costco, Trader Joe’s, etc.).
  4. Pour in frozen blueberries (we use Kirkland brand)—half cup per drinker.
  5. Add a hand-full of raw almonds (or almond butter / peanut butter if you want a little fat).
  6. Toss in one banana.
  7. Choose your protein—vegetable power, whey powder, even a raw egg.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. (1 Corinthians 10:23)

Similarly, you can eat anything—but not everything is good for your body.

Don’t be fooled, your body will feel better and perform at a higher level if you give it fuel. The food I’ve listed above is fuel—mostly whole, clean, minimal processing… it does a body good.
