Sing it like you’re Whitney. Invest it like you’re Buffett. Run it like you’re Bolt.

I recently attended a high school musical with a nationally ranked performing arts program. The kids were amazing. And there were SO MANY of them.

Kids come from all over to be part of this performing arts program—always finishing top in the state and one of the best in the nation. But there are so many students involved that their time on stage—and time front-of-stage—was limited. In some cases, very limited.

I noticed that some students blend into the background. When they’re not in front, they act like it. It shows on their face and in their movements. As if being in the front two rows is the only place to shine.

However, the great ones are the kids who deserve to be up front, but don’t seem to care. They belt it out from the back. Their faces show that they’re doing what they love. Their voices carry like the crowd came for them. These are the students, I’m convinced, that will be successful in whatever they do.

So, if you find yourself in the back and waiting for your moment, don’t wait. Belt it out, do the work, and run your race. Someone is watching and you’re building a character that will take you, one day, to the front.
