Ask for help. There’s no shame in it.

We will all go through seasons in life when more help is required. Perhaps you need practical help, emotional support, or spiritual encouragement. It doesn’t matter. Ask a trusted source. Be humble and vulnerable, but ask. There are so many benefits… for both the asker and the helper.

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

It feels good—to the encourager—when he/she encourages someone else. It’s a win/win. God designed us that way. It’s like a divine dopamine give-back.

Plus,

• we better understand God’s grace, both when we give and when we receive help.

• we feel more connected to God, both when we give and when we receive help.

• we experience more meaningful connections to other people, both when we give and when we receive help.

This past season has been a season of receiving help for me. I’m grateful for older men who have walked with me and encouraged me. I’m grateful for peers who have laughed with me and had my back. I’m thankful for a network of friends who have pumped me up with words of encouragement and practical support.

It’s all been meaningful to me. And so we need to remember and believe this truth: It’s good for the givers, too!

So, if you’re in a season of needing extra support, pray to your generous God, and then ask actual humans. God works through His people.

If you’re in a season of abundance and blessing, pray to your generous God, and ask him to point you in the direction of someone who needs a blessing. Then give, and be a conduit of God’s grace and generosity. Be part of God’s kingdom spreading on earth. And, who knows, one day soon, you might be the one asking for help. And there’s no shame in asking.
